I Like God's Style

In Progress - short film

I Like God’s Style is a short film inspired by Isabel Baker’s 1965 Christian rockabilly album of the same name. The story, written by Kirsten Kearse, follows a young girl, Isabel, (Maeve Kelly) a timid, young music fanatic who defies her overbearing Minister father (Jeff Medley) and struggles to find her own voice. Set in the 1960’s in rural Montana, Isabel’s family relocates to a small town in hopes of starting a new life. Isabel is disillusioned when she fails to fit in amongst her peers and finds her faith further wavering as dark secrets are brought to light. Produced by Kelly Bouma and Mike Steinberg.

Jane Says

2021 - experimental film

Jane Says is an amalgamation of memories, and a bit of imagination from the minds of Kelly Bouma and Mike Steinberg. It is a fever dream, a cultural homage to our early childhoods and influences. Most of the found footage is from circa 1982, however we did take some artistic liberties.

The intention of the piece from the very beginning was to bring lightness to our lives, in the studio and for you, the audience. We hope you enjoy it and maybe for the first time in your life, appreciate the good old days of the not so subtle, relentless stream of commercials. Maybe?

Originally commissioned by Bare Bait Dance as part of the CXQ Redux series. Co-created with Mike Steinberg.

The Foghorn Trilogy

2019 - short film

A short film about a romantic couple at three crucial stages in their lives. Loosely based on the filmmaker's parents, the whimsical film opens on a DJ in the 1960s who meets his future wife after a serendipitous visit to the radio station. The middle sequence finds the couple in a literal and figurative battle (set in the western wilderness in the 1870s) about whether or not to have a child. In the third act we find the couple aimlessly seeking a viable restaurant in a deserted small town, only to be faced with the tragicomedy of an indifferent world. Connected through musical and thematic occurrences, the arc of The Foghorn Trilogy is as unpredictable as the journey of two people drifting together - and apart....and back together again. Produced by Kelly Bouma and Mike Steinberg.
